Federico Carrone, known online as Fede’s Intern, has confirmed he is “safe and free” after being detained in Turkey for 24 hours. Authorities accused him of helping others misuse an Ethereum-based privacy protocol — a claim Carrone firmly rejects.

Carrone believes the detention is linked to a 2022 research paper on Ethereum mixers and Tornado Cash, which analyzed privacy properties but, he insists, never aided illegal activity.

Carrone’s case is part of a broader crackdown on crypto developers connected to open-source privacy tools.

Notable cases include Tornado Cash creators Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm, whose legal battles could set a precedent for criminalizing privacy-focused blockchain development. Such a move could stifle DeFi innovation and limit privacy rights worldwide.

Global Support Led to His Release 🤝

Carrone said the early hours looked grim — he was told he’d lose his phone and communication rights. But help came quickly from friends and colleagues across the UAE, UK, US, Europe, Argentina, and even members of the Solana ecosystem.

These connections reached senior Turkish officials, ultimately securing his release. Carrone is now in Europe, but the case remains open. He says he’s prepared to return to Turkey to clear his name.

In solidarity, Carrone donated $500,000 in ETH to help fund Roman Storm’s legal defense.

“Builders need to know they can innovate without fear — and that the community will stand behind them,” he said.
